A boat crashed

ship was overloaded and lacked a certificate.
At least 14
people were killed in a boating accident off the coast of Haiti. A sailboat was
shipwrecked on Wednesday (08.19.2020) between the island of La Tortue and the
north coast of the Caribbean state, Haiti’s civil protection authority
announced. The victims included two two-year-old children and nine survivors
were rescued.
The boat was
overloaded with about 30 people and goods and did not have a license, Haitian
media quoted the head of the shipping authority, Eriv Prévost. On board were
island residents returning from their groceries at the market in the town of
Saint Louis du Nord.
The Prime
Minister of Haiti, Joseph Jouthe, expressed his condolences to the families of
the victims in a statement on Thursday. He called the incident “another tragedy
affecting the Haitian people.” In Haiti – the poorest country in the Western
Hemisphere – it is not uncommon for unsafe or overloaded boats to crash.
